This June honors the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, otherwise known as the Stonewall Uprising, which saw members of the LGBTQ+ community fight back against harassment from the police in Greenwich Village in June 1969. While progress has been made in the last 50 years, we still have a long way to go in fighting for LBGTQ+ rights.

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

On June 19th, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, sex, and national origin. Title VII of the act protects employees by prohibiting discrimination by employers.

On June 10, 2016 Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed into law House Bill 16-1432, the Colorado Personnel File Bill to give Colorado #employees the right to access their personnel files. Unfortunately the law does have flaws regarding accessibility for employees and something we hope can be changed with future legislation.

June 10, 1963 President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on #gender. We still have a long way to go to eliminate the gender pay gap, but we celebrate this crucial first step.

LBGT CONVERSION THERAPY BANNED

LBGT CONVERSION THERAPY BANNED

Great progress for LGBTQ rights! Mental health professionals in Colorado are now banned from trying to change a minor’s sexual orientation or “sexual or romantic attraction or feelings toward individuals of the same-sex,” often referred to as conversion therapy. Also, now transgender Coloradans can update their birth certificates without having to prove they surgically changed their gender or submit a public notice.

Happy Memorial Day! We are so grateful for all the veterans who have fought or are fighting for our country and our freedom.

Today we are also grateful to all the legislators who work every day to make sure that all our veterans employment rights are protected through laws like the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act and the Veterans Opportunity to Work to Hire Heroes Act.

Today we celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act which revised the Colorado Anti-Discrimination act by extending employment non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ+ residents, declaring that employers cannot discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
